Halo cold dark matter and microlensing.

چکیده
There is good evidence that most of the baryons in the Universe are dark and some evidence that most of the matter in the Universe is nonbaryonic with cold dark matter (cdm) being a promising possibility. We discuss expectations for the abundance of baryons and cdm in the halo of our galaxy and locally. We show that in plausible cdm models the local density of cdm is at least 10 g cm. We also discuss what one can learn about the the local cdm density from microlensing of stars in the LMC by dark stars in the halo and, based upon a suite of reasonable two-component halo models, conclude that microlensing is not a sensitive probe of the local cdm density.

MACHOs: THE PLOT THICKENS
We discuss the implications of the recent upward revision of the LMC microlensing rate by the MACHO Collaboration. We conclude: (i) A good case for the existence of baryonic dark matter in the halo has been made; (ii) The case for the existence of cold dark matter is unaffected and still compelling; and (iii) The Galactic halo is still an excellent place to search for cold dark matter particles...
متن کاملGravitational microlensing and the galactic halo.
By means of extensive galactic modeling we study the implications of the more than eighty microlensing events that have now been observed for the composition of the dark halo of the Galaxy, as well as for other properties of the Galaxy. We take the Galaxy to be comprised of luminous and dark disk components, a bulge, and a dark halo consisting of both MACHOs and cold dark matter with each compo...
متن کاملDark Matter and Gamma Rays from the Galactic Halo
The nature of the dark matter in the halo of our Galaxy is still largely unknown. The microlensing events found so far towards the Large Magellanic Cloud suggest that at most about 20% of the halo dark matter is in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects). The dark matter could also, at least partially, consist of cold molecular clouds (mainly H2). Another possibility is ...
متن کاملGamma Ray Astronomy and Baryonic Dark Matter
Recently, Dixon et al. (1998) have re-analyzed the EGRET data, finding a statistically significant diffuse γ-ray emission from the galactic halo. We show that this emission can naturally be explained within a previously-proposed model for baryonic dark matter, in which γ-rays are produced through the interaction of high-energy cosmic-ray protons with cold H2 clouds clumped into dark clusters th...
متن کاملMicrolensing and halo cold dark matter.
We discuss the implications of the more than 50 microlensing events seen by the EROS, MACHO, and OGLE collaborations for the composition of the halo of our galaxy. The event rates indicate that the halo mass fraction in MACHO’s is less than 30%, consistent with expectations for a universe whose primary component is cold dark matter. We caution that the uncertainties are such that a larger MACHO...
